It is well known that most CD stores determine their inventory by national sales ratings and that 'specialty' recordings, and recordings on independent labels, are being squeezed out. In other words, if it is not highly commercial rock or country music, it is probably not on their A or B list, and if it is not a superstar classical artist such as Pavarotti or Horowitz, it is probably not on their C or D list either!
Soundset Recordings was designed with the musician in mind, and for those whose tastes are not satisfied by the popular music industry. We want to be your source for specialty recordings featuring some of the best in classical, acoustic instrumental, and other music genres. Many are by artists and small companies such as our own who have produced great recordings but who cannot compete with the promotional resources of the major labels. You can always count on these recordings and performances to be of the highest quality.
Two of our founders, Frank Koonce and Todd Hallawell, are professional musicians. Frank Koonce, our Artists and Repertoire Director, has directed the classical guitar program at Arizona State University since 1978 and is an international performing artist. He has served as Chair of the Advisory Board for the Guitar Foundation of America and is a contributing editor for the GFA journal Soundboard. His editions of music are available through Mel Bay Publications, Inc., and the Neil A. Kjos Music Company. See: http://www.frankkoonce.com. Todd Hallawell, Chief Engineer for Soundset, is the winner of a Rotary Fellowship in Music and as a result received part of his training in recording engineering at Amazon Studios, Liverpool, England. He is a classically trained musician who has performed professionally for over 25 years and, as first-prize winner of the "Winfield Competition," holds the title of "1997 National Finger-Picking Champion."
