Mississippi State University Bands
The Famous Maroon Band at Mississippi State University has one of the oldest traditions in the Southeast and has been a significant part of the Mississippi State family for more than one hundred ten years. Ensembles within the band program have achieved national and international acclaim through their many performances over the years and are a source of great pride to students, alumni, and fans of the university.
Band plays a key role in student life at MSU with the membership representing thirteen different states and almost every college and school on campus. Band membership provides students with opportunities to develop their musicianship, social skills, and leadership, regardless of their field of study. With an average ACT score of 27, over 75% of the band graduated in the top 25% of their high school class. In addition to their academic achievement, one out of five band students was a member of the All-State Band in their home state.
The 390 member Famous Maroon Band performs at all Bulldog football games as well as other university functions as needed. Five concert bands comprise the concert component of the band program with the Wind Ensemble serving as the premiere concert band. In addition to the marching and concert bands, students may also participate in jazz band and basketball pep band.
