Nathan Fischer
For twenty years Nathan has built a career that has taken him full swing around the world. Currently, he is a Career Specialist with the Office of Entrepreneurship and Career Development (OECD) with the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, and an Adjunct Senior Lecturer with the Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts in Perth, Australia.
Nathan has been a Senior Lecturer of Classical Guitar with the Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in Malaysia, a Post-Doctoral Fellow and Visiting Assistant Professor at the American University in Cairo, and a Visiting Professor at the National Conservatory in Cairo, Egypt. In 2013, he was a recipient of the UiTM Outstanding Service Award
Nathan has received grants from organizations including the Fromm Foundation at Harvard, the Howard Hanson Institute for New Music, AUC/UiTM Faculty Research Grants, and a U.S. Fulbright Scholar Grant. He is currently a co-researcher for a Bestari Perdana grant titled The Malaysian Art Song as a Unifying and Empowering Cultural Identity. This research included studying the works of Antonio Lauro with Luis Zea in Caracas, Venezuela. Nathan has volunteered as a board member with the Guitar Society of Las Vegas, the Northern Virginia Fine Arts Association, and in 2006 he founded the International Guitar Institute.
Performance research has included the Arab oud in addition to the classical guitar. Nathan has appeared on five continents as a soloist, chamber musician, and member of the Silver Sands Guitar Trio. An advocate for commissioning and performing new music he has worked with many exciting composers world-wide.
Nathan holds a DMA and a MM from the Eastman School of Music where he studied with Nicholas Goluses and a BM from George Mason University. He attended the Academia di Musicale Chigiana in Siena, Italy with Oscar Ghiglia in 1997. Upon graduation from Eastman in 2004, he received the Andrés Segovia Award for Musical Accomplishment and Human Endeavor.
Nathan currently plays guitars by Robert Ruck and Greg Smallman and Sons.
